A Little History...

The original two-room structure, built in 1771,  was the farmhouse of John Whitlock, an early settler in Lenox whose farmlands occupied much of what became Lenox Village. In the late 1770’s, Whitlock opened his house as an inn along with many Berkshire householders who supplemented their farming income by providing lodging for stagecoach travelers. In the late 18th century, Whitlock sold his land, some of which became Church Street. 
In 1821 the house and land were purchased by Lemuel Parsons for $105. Mr. Parsons, a wagon-maker, returned it for use as a private home.  Around 1890, Graham Root purchased the property and improved the original home by attaching two barns. After his endeavor to create more lodging space, he opened the house once again as an inn.  The house was officially named “The Graham Root Inn”, but was generally known as the Grey House.

The inn has undergone several renovations over the decades, but none as ambitious as the current upgrades which began when new owners took over in June of 2019. 

Our Renovation - Adding modern convenience to historic charm

We started  with the exterior, including all new energy-efficient windows, paint, fencing, landscaping, and a new roof. The visual impact of these changes was immediate, leaving us with much excitement to begin working on the inside.


Our interior changes began with upgrading our facility to ensure compliance with the latest safety regulations; including electrical, fire and ADA accessibility. We then moved to the restaurant kitchen where we upgraded all equipment, allowing us to provide future guests with a unique and expanded menu. The remodeling of the dining area included new flooring, seating, and décor in order to provide the best dining experience possible.

The final renovations were devoted to remodeling the thirty guest rooms and bathrooms. With each room being unique, we challenged our designers to optimize the layout of each room to improve our guest’s experience. Every bathroom was completely remodeled with new fixtures and décor, and each room upgraded with new furniture, wallpaper, carpet and new heating & cooling units to provide the ultimate comfort for our guests year-round.
